Beyond the Classroom
Personal Development at Catshill Middle School

At Catshill Middle School, we are committed to developing the whole child and providing rich opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Our personal development provision is designed to nurture pupils’ character, confidence, and talents, while encouraging them to become responsible, resilient, and active members of the school and wider community. Guided by our core values — Be Kind, Be Respectful, Be Ready, Be Safe — all pupils are supported to explore their interests, develop essential life skills, and thrive.
Leadership and Pupil Voice
Pupils are given meaningful opportunities to contribute to school life and have their voices heard. Through Catshill Congress (School Council), pupils work collaboratively across Wellbeing, Eco, Digital, Enrichment, and Learning councils to influence decision-making and improve the school experience for everyone. Our Prefects, along with the Head Boy and Head Girl, act as positive role models, developing leadership, responsibility, and communication skills while supporting the wider school community.

House System and Competitions
Our House system — Eagle, Hawk, Red Kite, and Falcon — encourages teamwork, healthy competition, and a strong sense of belonging. Pupils earn points through academic, sporting, and community achievements, promoting pride, resilience, and positive behaviour. For Year 8 pupils, We Are the Champions provides an additional opportunity to take part in team challenges that build confidence, collaboration, and leadership as they prepare for the next stage of their education.

Enrichment, Clubs, Trips and Careers
A wide range of extracurricular clubs and educational visits are offered to ensure pupils can discover and develop their interests and talents. From sport and the arts to academic and interest-based clubs, our provision is inclusive and shaped by the pupil's voice. Trips and enrichment opportunities enhance cultural capital, broaden horizons, and support learning beyond the classroom. In addition, careers guidance, workshops, and guest speakers introduce pupils to future pathways, helping them develop aspirations, confidence, and an understanding of the world of work.
Wider Opportunities and Experiences
Guest speakers and visitors play an important role in enriching pupils’ understanding of the world, raising aspirations, and supporting career awareness. These experiences help pupils to develop confidence, curiosity, and an understanding of life in modern Britain. We regularly have visits from local religious leaders and the MP has visited too!
Together, these opportunities form a coherent and inclusive personal development programme that supports pupils’ wellbeing, character, leadership, and readiness for future success. By embracing our core values, engaging in leadership and enrichment opportunities, and preparing for life beyond school, every child at Catshill Middle School is empowered to flourish — because here, we aim to be the best!
