History

At Catshill Middle School, we are historians! Our history curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity, inspire discovery, and empower children to make meaningful connections between the past and the present.

Our History curriculum inspires pupils to explore the past with curiosity, imagination, and critical thinking. Through engaging lessons and thought-provoking enquiries, children develop a deep understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world — discovering how people and events have shaped the world we live in today.

Each topic is a journey through time, where pupils step into the shoes of those who came before them — building on from ancient civilisations to modern history. They learn to ask perceptive questions, weigh evidence, and form balanced arguments, developing the skills to think critically and see history as an ongoing story in which they, too, play a part.

Our curriculum celebrates diversity and encourages empathy, helping pupils understand different cultures, perspectives, and experiences. Through hands-on learning — such as handling artefacts, exploring local history, and debating key historical events — pupils discover that history isn’t just about dates and facts, but about people, stories, and change.

By the end of Key Stage 3, pupils see history not only as something to be studied, but as something to be understood, questioned, and appreciated — giving them a strong sense of identity and connection to the world around them.

In line with one of our federation's core values – aspiration – we aim to develop possibilities for all! We want children to have no limits to what their ambitions are, aspiring to be:

  • Archaeologists,

  • Museum Curators,

  • Historians,

  • Research Analysts,

  • Journalists,

  • Educators… and so much more!
