Curriculum

At Catshill Middle School, our curriculum is built around three simple but powerful ideas: self-belief, kindness, and aspiration. These values guide everything we do — from the way we interact with each other, to the way we build dreams and celebrate success.

We aim to be the best…

We believe these middle years — from Year 5 to Year 8 — are a special time. Children are growing in independence, curiosity and confidence, and our curriculum is designed to help them make the most of this exciting stage.

We believe that every child should leave our school feeling confident in who they are, curious about the world, and ready to take on new challenges with both courage and compassion. Our curriculum is broad, balanced, and ambitious for all learners. It nurtures the head, heart and hands — building strong knowledge, vital skills, and the character to use them wisely.

Through carefully planned learning journeys, we help pupils build a deep understanding across all subjects, making sure that knowledge grows securely over time and that children can make meaningful connections between what they learn. We celebrate creativity and curiosity just as much as accuracy and achievement, because we know that learning is at its best when it sparks joy and wonder.

In Years 5 and 6, we strengthen the firm foundations of primary learning — ensuring pupils feel confident in core subjects like reading, writing and maths, while broadening their experiences across science, the arts and the humanities. In Years 7 and 8, we build on this foundation by introducing greater depth and challenge, encouraging pupils to think critically, work collaboratively, and develop independence in preparation for their next steps at High School and beyond.

Inclusion is at the heart of our approach. We make sure that every pupil — whatever their starting point or need — can thrive and succeed. Our curriculum reflects the diversity of our community and helps children understand their place in the wider world, nurturing respect, empathy and a sense of responsibility.

Whether pupils are writing poetry, designing experiments, performing on stage or leading a project, we want them to believe in themselves, be kind to others, and aspire to make a difference.

Above all, we want our pupils to leave Catshill Middle with a love of learning that will stay with them for life — confident, compassionate and ready for whatever comes next.
