Personal, Social & Health Education, including Relationship & Sex Education

At Catshill Middle School, we are committed to helping every child grow into a confident, compassionate, and responsible individual. Through our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, we equip pupils with the knowledge, understanding, and skills they need to thrive — personally, socially, and academically — and to make informed, healthy choices throughout their lives.

Our Approach – The Jigsaw Curriculum

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work, a whole-school, mindful approach to PSHE that brings together Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills, and spiritual development.
Created by teachers and health professionals, Jigsaw ensures that all statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex and Health Education are met, while also nurturing pupils’ emotional wellbeing, resilience, and sense of community.

Jigsaw is built around six progressive units, known as the ‘Puzzle Pieces’:

  1. Being Me in My World – understanding identity, belonging, and responsibility.

  2. Celebrating Difference – promoting respect, inclusion, and diversity.

  3. Dreams and Goals – setting personal aspirations and working towards success.

  4. Healthy Me – developing physical and emotional wellbeing.

  5. Relationships – building safe, respectful, and caring relationships.

  6. Changing Me – understanding change, growth, and the human life cycle, including age-appropriate Sex Education content.

Together, these units create a rich, progressive curriculum that nurtures the whole child and helps pupils understand themselves and the world around them.

RSHE – Relationships, Sex and Health Education

Our RSHE lessons are taught sensitively and age-appropriately, helping pupils to develop a clear understanding of healthy relationships, consent, and self-respect.
Through these sessions, pupils learn how to:

  • Recognise and maintain positive, respectful relationships

  • Understand emotions, consent, and personal boundaries

  • Develop confidence, empathy, and self-worth

  • Manage the changes of puberty with confidence

  • Stay physically and emotionally healthy

We ensure that all learning is inclusive, factual, and respectful of diversity, in line with the Equality Act 2010. Pupils are encouraged to celebrate difference and develop understanding and respect for others, preparing them for life in modern Britain.

Safeguarding, British Values and SMSC Development

PSHE and RSHE are key parts of our school’s safeguarding culture. Through these lessons, pupils learn how to stay safe, both online and offline, and how to seek help and support when needed.

Our curriculum also promotes British Values — democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs — by helping pupils understand their rights and responsibilities as members of a diverse and democratic society.

In addition, PSHE contributes to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development by encouraging reflection, empathy, teamwork, and respect for others’ viewpoints and beliefs.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

We believe that the partnership between home and school is vital in supporting every child’s personal development.
To help parents and carers understand our approach, we provide:

  • Information about statutory RSHE requirements

  • Curriculum overviews showing what is taught and when

  • Access to our PSHE and RSHE Policy

  • Opportunities to view teaching materials, ask questions, and share feedback during our PSHE & RSHE Open Afternoon in the summer term.
