English

At Catshill Middle School we provide an engaging and innovative English curriculum that promotes high standards of language and literacy by equipping children with the skills to read, speak and write fluently.

Designed to inspire curiosity, ignite imagination, and empower every pupil, the English curriculum lies at the heart of our school.

However, it is reading that is the beating pulse. Through reading, children journey into different worlds, exploring diverse voices, perspectives, and experiences. From timeless classics such as A Christmas Carol and Romeo and Juliet  to modern fiction such as Wonder and Stormbreaker, powerful poetry and engaging non-fiction, our carefully chosen texts challenge pupils to think critically, empathise deeply, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Pupils learn how to craft their ideas into powerful pieces of work, whether it’s creating a gripping story, presenting a balanced argument, or writing for real-life purposes. They experiment with vocabulary, structure, and style, building their skills step-by-step and learning that their words have the power to inform, inspire and change the world.

Spoken language is valued just as highly. Through discussions, debates, drama, and presentations, pupils learn to articulate their ideas with clarity and confidence, listening carefully to others and responding thoughtfully.

Our English curriculum nurtures essential skills that go far beyond the classroom: critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. These are the skills that open doors to future opportunities and enable our pupils to become active, thoughtful participants in the world around them.

In line with our federation's core value of aspiration, we aim to develop possibilities for all! We want children to have no limits to their ambitions, aspiring to be:

  • Authors

  • Journalists

  • Screenwriters

  • Editors

  • Copywriters

  • Playwrights

  • Broadcasters and so much more!
